Is iRootWord fully offline?
Yes. The affix dictionary, word decomposer, SRS review, and stats all work without internet. Only optional iCloud sync uses network when enabled.
Do I need an account?
No. No registration, no login, no account.
How many affixes are included?
240+ affixes — 44 prefixes, 171 roots, 30 suffixes — with 770+ example words across 46 categories.
How does the word decomposer work?
Type any English word. The app strips known prefixes and suffixes, matches roots against the built-in table, and shows segment-by-segment explanations — all on-device. Matched affixes link to dictionary detail pages.
What SRS algorithm is used?
Leitner spaced repetition with box intervals of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 days. Rate each card Again / Hard / Good / Easy; reaching the top box means mastered.
What review modes are available?
Flashcards and multiple-choice quizzes.
What widgets are available?
Daily root, hourly root, review progress, and favorites glance — for home screen and lock screen. iOS 18+ adds a Start Review Control Center control.
Can I use Siri or Shortcuts?
Yes. Ask for today’s root, decompose a word, or start review. See Shortcut Links.
What does iCloud Sync cover?
Optional sync for favorites and SRS progress (study log, streaks). It is off by default and uses your private iCloud key-value store.
Is the dictionary translated to English?
The UI supports English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Dictionary content remains in Chinese (Simplified, with live 简→繁 conversion) — even when the UI is English. This is by design.
Is iRootWord open source?
Yes. The app source is GPL-3.0 on GitHub.
