iEnglish is an English vocabulary learning app for beginners with 3000 core entry-level words grouped A–Z. It features native pronunciation, daily quizzes, custom playlists, a reading assistant, and widgets — fully offline on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Getting Started

  1. Open iEnglish and browse words by letter or switch to grid view.
  2. Tap any word to see its detail — Apple Dictionary definition, pronunciation, and Youdao lookup.
  3. Use the Quiz tab to take a daily 5-question quiz and track your streak.
  4. Create Playlists for sequential word playback with adjustable loops, intervals, and speed.
  5. Try the Reading Assistant in Settings — paste any English text for read-aloud with pause/resume.
  6. Mark words as Learned or Mastered on the detail page; review all marked words in Settings → Learning Records; track overall progress in Settings → Learning Stats.
  7. Optionally enable iCloud Sync in Settings to keep favorites, learning status, and the wrong-answer book in sync across your Apple devices.
  8. Add Widgets to your home screen (iPhone and iPad only) for a Daily Word, quiz progress, or favorites. Open the same destinations via ienglish:// URLs — see the URL Scheme Reference.

Features

  • 3000 Core Words — Entry-level vocabulary with A–Z grouping, list/grid view switching, and an optional A–Z sidebar index (toggle in Settings).
  • Word Detail — Apple Dictionary (native on iOS, multi-dictionary cards on macOS), Youdao lookup, learning-status menu, and long-image sharing.
  • Repeat Play — Long-press the speaker (iOS) or right-click Repeat Play (macOS) for unlimited-loop pronunciation without changing global voice settings.
  • Inline Play Button — Optional trailing play control on word list rows (Settings; off by default).
  • In-App Review Prompt — Optional custom full-screen review guide before the system rating dialog.
  • Learning Progress — Mark words as Learned or Mastered on the detail page; Learned Rate in Settings counts both learned and mastered words. Learning Records lists every word you have marked, with filters for learned and mastered.
  • iCloud Sync — Optional toggle in Settings syncs favorites, learning status, and the wrong-answer book across devices signed in to the same iCloud account.
  • Clear Recent — Remove your recent-browsing history from the Words tab or Settings.
  • Meaning Language — Choose Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or English for word translations independently of the app UI language.
  • Native Pronunciation — English and Chinese TTS with adjustable loops, intervals, volume, and speed.
  • Reading Assistant — Paste English text for TTS with pause/resume support (Settings).
  • Daily Quiz — 5 questions per day, streak counter, wrong-answer book with links to word details, and question tracking.
  • Custom Playlists — Auto-generate word plans, rename, exclude learned/mastered words, Play from here, sequential playback with screen stay-on.
  • Widgets (iOS only) — Daily Word (word pool: all / letter / category on iOS 17+; shuffle ⇄ on iOS 17+), Category Spotlight, Quiz Progress, Favorites, and Wrong Book for home screen and lock screen. Widget background can follow the app theme gradient (toggle in Settings).
  • 15 Theme Presets — Plus custom color picking for a personalized look.
  • macOS Native — Keyboard shortcuts (⌘F search, ⌘1–5 tabs, Esc back), inline search, multi-dictionary cards, Mac-style dialogs, default grid layout. Widgets are not available on macOS.

iEnglish offers 5 home-screen widgets and 4 lock-screen widgets to keep learning at a glance.

How to Add

  1. Long-press your Home Screen to enter edit mode.
  2. Tap the + button and search for “iEnglish.”
  3. Choose a widget, swipe to select the size, and tap Add Widget.
  4. For Lock Screen widgets, long-press the Lock Screen, tap Customize, and add an iEnglish accessory.
