How do I search for a word?
Use the search bar at the top of the word list, or press ⌘F on Mac to activate inline search. As you type, the list filters and auto-scrolls to matching results. You can search in English, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese.
How does the daily quiz work?
Go to the Quiz tab to start. Each day you get 5 multiple-choice questions drawn from the 3000-word library. Correct answers build your streak counter. Wrong answers are automatically saved to the Wrong-Answer Book so you can review and practise them later.
How do playlists work?
Go to the Playlist tab and tap ＋ to create a new plan. Enter a name and word count — iEnglish randomly picks words from the library (excluding words already used in other plans). You can optionally exclude words marked Learned or Mastered. Rename or delete plans from the list; open a plan to play words sequentially. Use the context menu Play from here to start mid-list. During playback the screen stays on (iOS). Adjust loop count, interval and speed in Settings → Voice.
How do I repeat pronunciation on a word?
On the word detail page, long-press the circular speaker button (about 0.35 s) on iPhone or iPad to loop pronunciation indefinitely until you tap stop — this does not change your global loop setting. On Mac, right-click the speaker and choose Repeat Play for the same behavior.
How does learning status work?
Open any word detail and use the toolbar menu to mark it Learned, Mastered, or Unlearned. Learned Rate in Settings → Learning Stats counts both learned and mastered words across the 3000-word library. Open Settings → Learning Records to browse every word you have marked, with filters for learned and mastered.
How does iCloud sync work?
Go to Settings → iCloud Sync and turn the toggle on. Favorites, learning status, and the wrong-answer book sync across iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices signed in to the same iCloud account. Turning sync off keeps data on the device; you can optionally remove the copy stored in iCloud.
How do I clear recent browsing?
On the Words tab, use the clear action for recent history, or go to Settings to remove your recent-browsing list. Favorites, playlists, and learning status are not affected.
How do I toggle the A–Z sidebar index?
Go to Settings and turn the A–Z index on or off. When enabled, a letter sidebar appears in list view for quick jumping between sections.
How do I change meaning language?
Go to Settings → Meaning Language to choose Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or English for word translations. This is independent of the app UI language in Settings → Language.
How do I use the Reading Assistant?
Open Settings → Reading Assistant (English TTS reader). Paste or type any English text, then tap play to start text-to-speech. You can pause and resume at any time. Adjust speech rate and volume in Settings → Voice.
Does iEnglish require an internet connection?
No. All 3000 words, definitions and pronunciations are stored in a local SQLite database on your device. Quizzes, playlists, widgets and the Reading Assistant all work fully offline. The only feature that optionally uses the network is Youdao dictionary lookup in the word detail view.
How do I use widgets?
Long-press your Home Screen or Lock Screen to enter edit mode, tap the ＋ button, and search for “iEnglish.” Available widgets include Daily Word, Category Spotlight, Quiz Progress, Favorites and Wrong Book. Favorites and Wrong Book are Small size only. On iOS 17+, edit the Daily Word widget to choose a word pool (all words, a letter, or a category). Tap the ⇄ shuffle button on supported Daily Word widgets to pick another word without opening the app. Widgets update automatically on iPhone and iPad. In Settings, you can toggle widget background follows theme so home-screen widgets use your app theme gradient.
Does iEnglish work on macOS?
Yes. iEnglish is a native macOS app (requires macOS 13.0+). It supports keyboard shortcuts including ⌘F for search, ⌘1–5 to switch tabs, Esc to go back or dismiss sheets, Mac-style inline search, multi-dictionary cards via the macOS Dictionary framework, and Repeat Play via right-click on the word-detail speaker button. Widgets are not available on macOS — add them on iPhone or iPad only.
How do I change the theme?
Go to Settings → Theme. Choose from 15 preset colour themes or tap the colour wheel icon to pick any custom colour using the system colour picker. The theme applies to the entire app instantly.
How do I change the app language?
Go to Settings → Language inside the app. You can choose English, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese independently of your device’s system language.
What are Deep Links and how do I use them?
iEnglish supports the ienglish:// URL scheme. Paths include word, quiz, favorites, wrong, playlist, and categories. Use them in Shortcuts, bookmarks, or widgets. See the URL Scheme Reference.
How does the tip jar work?
iEnglish offers optional tips via StoreKit 2 in Settings. All payment processing is handled entirely by Apple. We do not receive or store any financial information.
